City to Shore Adventures - Bonfire #276

City Lights and Coastal Nights
From city streets to shoreline sunsets, City to Shore Adventures was truly one for the books.
The adventure began in New York City, but the first stop wasn’t about sightseeing. It was about remembering.
At the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, our veterans stood among the names, stories, and memories of a day that changed America forever. They paused to honor the lives lost and the sacrifices made—and to reflect on the men and women who answered the call in the years that followed.
From there, the group stepped back into the energy of the city. They explored the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, took on the NYC subway together, experienced the bright lights of Times Square, and enjoyed a classic New York slice and a meal at the legendary Katz’s Deli.
There was laughter. There were stories. And, as often happens on a Bonfire, there was the easy camaraderie that comes from being around people who simply understand.
Then the group headed across the Hudson to New Jersey, trading the noise and energy of the city for salt air, open water, and a whole new adventure.
A fishing charter carried them from Barnegat Bay into the Atlantic, where a beautiful day on the water brought plenty of sunshine, good-natured competition, and a few fish over the rail. Back on shore, the group slowed down and enjoyed some well-earned beach time before heading to the Seaside Heights Boardwalk.
Their retreat house couldn’t have been better located—just a few spots down from the famous Jersey Shore house. But the location was only part of what made the experience special. It was the people inside that house, sharing meals, telling stories, laughing, and simply spending time together, that made it feel like home.
And then came the Bonfire.
As the flames rose, the energy of the retreat gave way to something quieter. Veterans gathered together to reflect, remember, and connect. Around the Bonfire, there was no pressure to explain what they had been through and no need to find the right words.
They were simply with people who understood.
That is often where the most powerful moments happen—not in the big adventures or the places visited, but in the quiet moments between them. A conversation. A laugh. A shared story. A hand on a shoulder. The realization that, once again, they weren’t facing life’s battles alone.
City to Shore Adventures may have taken our Purple Heart veterans from city streets to shoreline sunsets, but the real journey was something deeper.
It was about connection. It was about camaraderie. It was about creating memories that would last long after the bags were unpacked.
And, most importantly, it was about reminding each veteran that they have a community beside them—and that they never have to walk the journey alone.
