California Dreamin' - Bonfire #280

October 1, 2026

Sunshine, Adventure & the Power of Connection

Sunshine, ocean waves, roaring jets, rodeo action, and plenty of adventure made California Dreamin’ unforgettable. But as with every Warrior Bonfire retreat, what mattered most wasn’t where our Purple Hearts went or what they did—it was the connections they built along the way.

Our Purple Hearts came together in San Diego for several days designed to give them a chance to step away from everyday life, experience something new, and spend time with fellow veterans who understand the journey after combat.

Experiencing the Best of San Diego

There was no shortage of excitement.

The group experienced America’s Airshow at Miramar, took in the action at the Poway Rodeo, and toured the historic USS Midway. They also traded dry land for the water with sailing, jet skiing, and paddleboarding before enjoying some well-earned time relaxing on the beach.

From the flight line to the rodeo grounds and from the deck of the USS Midway to the waters off the California coast, each day offered something different.

Then came one more surprise.

Just when the group thought the adventure couldn’t get any better, they were treated to a visit to SeaWorld San Diego. After enjoying a show, they sat down for dinner alongside the orcas as they practiced for an upcoming performance—an extraordinary way to spend an evening and a memory the group won’t soon forget.

More Than the Activities

The adventures may bring our Purple Hearts together, but they aren’t the real reason Warrior Bonfire retreats matter.

Between the big moments are the conversations, laughter, shared meals, quiet stretches on the water, and time spent with people who simply understand.

There is no pressure to explain your experiences. No requirement to share. Sometimes, being surrounded by other Purple Heart recipients who have faced their own challenges after combat creates the space for connection to happen naturally.

That connection can be powerful.

For a few days, participants can leave some of the pressures of everyday life behind, challenge themselves, laugh again, build friendships, and remember what it feels like to be part of a team.

That’s where the real impact of California Dreamin’ happened.

Adventure With a Purpose

At Warrior Bonfire, adventure is never just about adventure.

Experiences like California Dreamin’ create opportunities for combat-wounded Purple Heart recipients to rebuild camaraderie, strengthen connections, and move toward better days and brighter futures alongside people who understand.

A huge thank-you to the USS Midway, Poway Rodeo, Miramar Air Show, and SeaWorld San Diego for welcoming our Purple Hearts and helping make this retreat so memorable. Your generosity helped create experiences, friendships, and memories that will extend far beyond these few days in California.

Because sometimes the most important part of an adventure isn’t where you go—it’s who is beside you along the way.
