“This was hands-down the experience I’ve been needing and searching for in the last 15 years,” said one Purple Heart recipient after joining the Warrior Bonfire Program’s 204th retreat, California Dreaming, in San Diego, California.

At the same time, another group of Purple Heart recipients gathered across the country for Retreat #205, American Patriot Adventures, in Boston, Massachusetts. Both retreats offered unique opportunities to connect, heal, and celebrate the shared bond of service through distinctly American experiences.

California Dreaming – San Diego, California

The participants of Retreat #204 were welcomed to sunny San Diego, where they embarked on a journey filled with adventure and reflection. The trip kicked off with a visit to the USS Midway Museum. Walking the decks of this historic aircraft carrier brought back powerful memories of service and sacrifice, reinforcing the bond between brothers and sisters in arms.

The excitement continued at the Miramar Airshow, where the awe-inspiring performances of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels brought cheers and smiles to the crowd. The group also tapped into the spirit of the West at the Poway Rodeo, soaking up the thrill of bronco rides and the energy of a community event.

In true California style, the retreat wouldn’t have been complete without time on the water. Jet skiing across Mission Bay brought bursts of adrenaline and laughter, while a serene sailing adventure offered a moment to reflect and recharge.

American Patriot Adventures – Boston, Massachusetts

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, participants of Retreat #205 dove into American history and culture in Boston, Massachusetts. The weekend began with a tour of Boston’s historic landmarks, where veterans walked in the footsteps of the nation’s founders, exploring iconic locations like the Freedom Trail and Boston Harbor.

The group then experienced the timeless magic of Fenway Park at a Boston Red Sox game. Cheering on the team under the lights of one of America’s most storied stadiums was an unforgettable moment of joy and camaraderie.

The retreat continued with quintessential New England fall activities. Apple picking in the crisp autumn air and a peaceful day of fishing brought the group closer together, offering moments of laughter, connection, and relaxation amidst the beauty of the Massachusetts countryside.

One Mission, Two Unforgettable Experiences

Both retreats embodied the Warrior Bonfire Program’s mission: to provide Purple Heart recipients with opportunities for healing, camaraderie, and reconnection.

Whether exploring the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego or standing in the shadow of American history in Boston, these retreats reminded participants of the profound impact their service has had on this nation—and the importance of creating space for joy and shared experiences in their healing journey.
