From Boston to Brotherhood: Five Purple Heart Veterans Still Standing Together Five Years Later

In 2021, five Post-9/11 Purple Heart recipients arrived in Boston for a Warrior Bonfire Program retreat called American Patriot Adventures. Like many of our members, each of them carried their own story, their own struggles, and the invisible weight that becomes a part of you after service and sacrifice.

Over the course of that retreat, they experienced the best of Boston together—watching the Red Sox take on the Yankees at Fenway Park, exploring the rich history of the city, and sharing conversations that only fellow combat-wounded veterans can truly understand.

The group then traveled to Connecticut where the retreat continued with time spent apple picking in the fall countryside and participating in a Mohegan sweat lodge ceremony, a powerful cultural experience centered on reflection, healing, and brotherhood.

What began as a few days together quickly turned into something far deeper.

Over the last five years, these five warriors have stayed connected. They’ve traveled to see one another, stayed in touch through life’s ups and downs, and continued supporting each other in ways that only those who have walked a similar path can.

This past weekend, they reunited again—this time to celebrate one of their own getting married.

Moments and relationships like this are exactly what the Warrior Bonfire Program is all about.

Our retreats create the space for Post-9/11 Purple Heart recipients to build authentic relationships with others who truly understand their experiences. What begins around a campfire or during a shared adventure often grows into a lifelong support network. These five warriors are a perfect example.

From Boston in 2021 to a wedding celebration in 2026, their bond continues to grow stronger with each new year.

At Warrior Bonfire, we often say:

“Pain shared is pain divided. Joy shared is joy multiplied.”

This group has lived both sides of that truth—and their brotherhood is proof that the connections formed through Warrior Bonfire can last a lifetime.

The Warrior Bonfire Program hosts retreats that aim to help Post-9/11 Purple Heart veterans build lifelong support networks.
